Anxiety Care Q & A

Why is dental anxiety a problem?

Dental anxiety is a fear of going to the dentist, which prevents between 9% and 20% of Americans from getting the dental care they need. This lapse in dental care due to anxiety or fear creates a vicious cycle that can lead to much bigger problems down the road.

As an example, if dental anxiety prevents you from getting your teeth screened regularly, tooth decay can progress unchecked. This means that instead of a simple cavity, you may need more extensive work — which means more trips to the dentist.

At Ascend Dental, the team of dental health providers wants to ensure that patients receive the preventive and proactive care they need, which is why they offer specialized anxiety care.

What are my options for anxiety care?

To ease your anxiety and ensure your comfort, the team at Ascend Dental, relies on two techniques:

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a fast-acting solution that prevents you from feeling pain and also acts as a mild sedative. The team delivers nitrous oxide using a mask and you simply inhale. Nitrous oxide goes to work to immediately relax you, even providing you with a euphoric feeling.

Oral Anti-Anxiety Medications

If you’re nervous about going to the dentist, the team at Ascend Dental, can provide you with anti-anxiety medication that you take orally before your visit. This means that when you arrive, you’re more relaxed, allowing the team time to quickly tend to your dental needs.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

If you opt for nitrous oxide, there’s nothing you need to do in advance of your visit to Ascend Dental. The main advantage of nitrous oxide is that it acts quickly and the effects wear off just as quickly. Once your provider removes the mask, all you need to do is wait 15 minutes or so for the gas to clear your system, at which point you’re free to go.

If you’re taking an oral anti-anxiety medication before your visit, you should have someone drive you to your appointment.
